Floating Pipe Shelving

Build your own pipe shelving with our free step by step plans. You can easily customize the size and finish so that it fits to your home. It's perfect in a kids room for toy storage or an office for books and decor.

For this unit, the studs are 16" apart and is 7' long to fit in a kids bedroom. I used 1/2" piping and purchased it from SupplyHouse and you can get the wood from Lowes or Home Depot. The cost of the project in total was $175 (I already had all of the tools) and took about 4 hours to complete.

Materials:

  • 24 - Flanges

  • 24 - 10" Nipples

  • 16 - 18" Nipples

  • 12 - 90° Tees

  • 8 - 90° Elbows

  • 4 - Caps

  • 1 - 1"x10"x6' Wood (depends on length of unit)

  • 2 - 1"x10"x8' Wood (depends on length of unit)

  • 2" screws

  • 20 - 1/2" 2-Hole Pipe Strap

  • 1/2" Screws

Tools:

  • Tape Measure

  • Pencil

  • Drill

  • Level

  • Miter Saw

  • Stud finder

Cut List:

  • 4 - 1x10x6' @ 18"

  • 2 - 1x10x8" @ 84"

Instructions

STEP 1

Assemble 4 - 18" nipples with 90° tees then add an elbow on each end. Attach 5 10" nipples to the 3 tees and 2 elbows, ensuring they are all level. Then attach the flanges to the ends of the 10" nipples. (Do this 4 times)

STEP 2

Find the stud that the support unit will go on. Measure 12" AFF (above floor finish) and mark the drill holes (make sure the drill holes are within the parameters of the stud). Use a level to ensure that each of the flanges are vertically level. Use the 2" screws to secure the support to the wall. (You may need a second person to assist, holding the support, as it is heavy.)

Repeat this step for the second support.

Before securing the second support, place the level on the 10" nipples and make sure each shelf support is level.

STEP 3

Assemble a 10" nipple to a flange then add a cap to the other end. Do this 4 times.

Find the stud that the support bars will go on. Measure 12" AFF and mark the drill holes. Use a level to ensure that each of the flanges are vertically and horizontally level. Use the 2" screws to secure the support bars to the wall.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2.

STEP 4

Measure, cut, and stain the wood for the shelves.

The stain used here is Mixwax - Early American.

Secure the shelves to the nipples using the 2-hole pipe straps.
